What is a transshipment?

Transshipment is the shipment of goods or containers to an intermediate destination that, from there, goes to yet another location. A container may be transshipped multiple times in one journey.

Transshipments take place at transport hubs and can happen for multiple reasons:

  • the changing from one type of transport/vessel to another during the journey
  • the combining of multiple shipments into a larger shipment (consolidation)
  • the division of a larger shipment into multiple smaller shipments (deconsolidation)
