Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has created a reference manual with duty rates for essentially all existing merchandise.
Called the “Harmonized Tariff System,” or HTS, it’s an incredibly complicated document to properly navigate on your own.
If you need guidance or assistance correctly classifying your items to check the duty rate, consider:
- Contacting your local port of entry. Find your port of entry here by selecting the state you’re importing through.
- Checking the U.S. International Trade Commission’s Tariff Database.
- Requesting a “Binding Ruling” online or via a letter to enable a binding pre-entry classification.
Self-classifying an item incorrectly can result in hefty fees. So we strongly advise turning to these options for help. We also suggest you speak directly with an import specialist if duty rate information plays a significant role in deciding whether to import your goods or not.
